FRD Erebus 10R

The Erebus design is currently split into 7 sections, and has a custom inside for 3D printing, not the inside specified in FRD’s 10R plan. The inside specifies for a standard rudder servo and Red Ant Stinger winch. All inside components are printed as one piece with the corresponding hull section.

Foils are sourced from Phil Holliday at K7 Yachts.

The current edition has a return line below deck, running through a spring tensioner in the foredeck, much like the Diamond. The sections vary in length, with the ends being much shorter than the middle sections, which are around 250mm each.

The hull is printed vertically. This means that while it has remarkable stiffness due to the gunwales and bulkheads lengthwise, it is susceptible to side impacts, much like any carbon 10R. However, upon impact, the layers themselves with split, rather than breaking, meaning that a split in the hull will form instead of a crack or hole (dependent on the size of the impact). This means that the layers, if pushed back together, with pop back together with a click. By dribbling or applying a small coat of Loctite HY 4070 on the inside, the hull will then be watertight and ready to be sailed as before, rather than the need for a carbon-level repair.

Upon the ordering of a new hull, you will be able to specify the size of servo insert to fit your servo. This is important as the length of the arm may not fit in the tray and may need to be shifted sideways. All hulls come complete with winch, fittings and foils. All that is needed to complete is a rig, servo and receiver. If ordering sails from Graham Bantock, I recommend ordering a rig kit simultaneously so he may alter the sails to fit the standard rig kit. The A rig sail plan does not gain enough tension in the gooseneck. Diamond rigs carry very similar, if not the same area, however the deck is flat so will need altering to fit.

Options:

Performance

  • The lightest hull, with a hull thickness of 1mm. Printed out of PLA-CF. More fragile than the other editions, however remarkably stiff.

  • Fittings, foils and Red Ant Stinger winch included.

  • Around £1650.

Club

  • A slightly heavier hull, about 100-200g. The hull is printed with a higher infill and a 2mm skin in some areas. Can be printed out of PLA-CF or PETG-CF (more impact resistant but heavier and less stiff). This edition is angled more towards sailors needing a more robust hull that can be thrown around (it is still a 10R and still fragile). Stiffer than the performance.

  • Fittings, foils and Red Ant Stinger winch included.

  • Around £1500.

Custom

  • A hull built to your standards, with varying thickness, and specialized fittings and designs. Build your own sheeting system and deck layout, and mix PLA-CF and PETG-CF on demand, with your own designs of colors embedded in the hull without coats.

  • P.O.R

On the performance and club hulls, the following can be customized:

  • Color (see below). Multicolor is possible.

  • Servo tray size.

  • Shroud type.

  • Types of sheeting fittings. (Price can vary)

Colors

The following colors are available (tiles below):

Burgundy Red

Royal Blue

Matcha Green

Jeans blue

Lava Grey

Black

Iris Purple

If you are unsure about colors, I recommend you search online for the exact name of the color listed above, followed by ‘Bambu Lab’. E.g. ‘Matcha Green Bambu Lab.’

All colors are slightly lighter/matte than shown. Rough tiles are below but this is not totally representative. The second hull on the about page is printed in burgundy red.

Hulls can be printed multicolor, in two ways. Firstly, the sections can be printed in different filaments. This gives a block of color effect (like the French Flag). This will add between £60 to £100+ to your order dependent on how many colors you order.

Secondly, one can send me designs for patterns. However, this will add a significant amount in price and the printing time is nearly quadrupled in some cases. Regardless, the effect is unparalleled in paint coats, and entirely unique, allowing for complete customization of the hull’s underside and deck. Names, Numbers and patterns can be added. Crude images are also possible in some cases.
